A Few Days in Jamaica Can Give You A New Look On Everything
It's been just a couple days since I've been back from Jamaica.
I stayed at a cliffside resort on the north coast in Negril. The resort was called the Samsara and it was a sister-resort with Legends down on the beach. So, if you stayed at one, you had the option of going cliffside whenever you wanted for beautiful sunsets, a hottub and a pool. Then, during the day, you could go down to the beach and get a great tan.
I flew into Montego Bay on Tuesday and took a shuttle to Negril. Jamaica appeared out my window to be everything I could have possibly imagined. Everything from the fortress-like resorts of the rich to the shanty towns of the not-so-well-off. There were the fishermen out in their small boats, men with long dredlocks and beards playing soccer on the beaches or walking along the sides of the road, women with children in their arms or in tow and shack after shack selling Jerk-style Chicken, beer or whatever else you want. Everyone in Jamaica wanted to sell you something, and you could have anything you wanted at the right price.
Wednesday was spent on the beach. I took a shuttle to Legends and went out on to the blinding sands where people of all sorts of European nationalities were. I heard at least Italian and German spoken with an occasional American voice thrown in. I rented a waverunner and hit the water. It was light blue and shallow and I shot out beyond the buoys until I got into the deeper dark waters, jumping crests and wakes and sliding underneath the parasailers who crisscrossed the bay. Later, after shopping for a bit, I went back to the beach and went parasailing. It was a calm, beautiful unbelievable experience.
Thursday was spent on the Black River inland. There, we saw crocodiles, fishermen and even got to pet a crocodile. The boatman tossed the animal some chicken and then grabbed its arm and pulled it against the boat. Remember this is an 8-9 foot croc. I climbed over the railing and touched his arm and then his back. The beast was slimy and cold. Then, others followed suit. After the Black River, I went out to YS falls and went swimming.
Thursday night, I had dinner with a couple young ladies I had met and enjoyed a last night in Jamaica. I flew out early the next morning.
With law school starting next week, a move to my new apartment, all my family on vacation and the hundred other things going on in life, it was a much-needed break to go to Jamaica and leave everything behind. Vacations, if taken right, truly can rejuvenate and give you the strength to shift gears and move on to new chapters in your life.
